I ♥ Hugo

Its been a bit of a dry spell for me as far as race wins go. Oddly enough the last race I won was 4 long years ago in a small town called Hugo, CO. I was a Cat 3 then. I upgraded a week later and haven’t had a clear view of the finish line since.

I’m not going to go into great detail about the race, other than to say I managed to get into the wrong break and had to figure out how to make it the right one. At mile 35 it was Baker, Tark., Pinkerton, Reichardt, (all VC, not good, not good at all), Berger (former VC, not sure where his alliances were), Nicol, Rubin, (former teammates) Colby Pearce from Slipstream, Jered Gruber from Time U23, a Horizon Dairy guy, a Hauln Ass guy, myself and it seems like I am missing somebody. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with this picture? I knew if we waited too long VC would start sending guys up the road and forcing the rest of us to chase. I didn’t much care for that plan. Luckily the heat, wind and repeated attacks over the numerous “climbs” on the course began to take there toll and with 18 miles to go it was down to Pinkerton, Rubin, Nicol, Pearce and myself. Ten miles later it was down to Pearce and myself. I knew I had absolutely no chance in hell against Colby in a sprint, so I managed to sneak away from him on one of the climbs with about 5k to go and never looked back. Yeah right, I was looking back every 15 seconds to make sure he wasn’t coming back.

I would like to say thanks to everyone that has given me a pat on the back (or a kiss on the cheek-Scott- not that there’s anything wrong with that ) after the race. It means a lot to me. So thanks.

  • Congratulations goes out to fellow Wednesday Night Worldser Brett Kirby for winning the Cat. 3 race. I guess I’ll be seeing you on the Pro, 1,2 start line at Horgan. Watch out guys he goes uphill pretty fast too.
  • How about that Rio 55+ team …another win at Hugo. Nice race boys!
  • Trish and Jo of the Rio taking 1st and 2nd in the SW 35 plus or minus race.

  • Nice guys do finish first . . . and apologize after for “going all agro” and beating up on the rest of us. Nice work Dan, there was no doubt you were the strongest rider in the group at Hugo.

  • Thanks Seth, I have a feeling you will be showing me a thing or three on Saturday.
